The electronic cigarette has revolutionised smoking habits in Europe and around the world, with more and more tobacco users turning to it for what they believe is a safer alternative to traditional cigarettes. But how safe are these simple devices and how effective are they at helping smokers kick the habit? So far there has been too little research done to arrive at any firm conclusions. In the meantime the European Parliament is gearing up to legislate on the e-cigarette amid concerns that it could be a health risk. Its supporters claim there is no justification for a ban or restrictions that would deprive smokers of access to a vital aid in their battle to quit.
